" Brenda "
1951 Singer 301A
Long Bed (with a story ;-)
NA467583

While the majority of my sewing machines are the Featherweights, I occasionally come across the big sister to the Featherweight - the 301A.  Many of their parts are interchangeable and they share many similarities.  However, the 301A is a larger, heavier sewing machine that is perfect for someone who needs just a little bit more power and strength.  They are wonderful for upholstery, denim, leather and other heavy fabrics.  Of course, they do a beautiful job on standard fabric as well.  They are coming into their own and are fast gaining popularity with quilters.

Brenda has quite lovely cosmetics with only minor pin marks and scuffs and her paint is shiny and bright.

Marjorie was completely disassembled, cleaned, polished, lubed and oiled.  She was then reassembled and adjusted and she's all ready to go back to work.  The photo below shows how she was refurbished.  This is a 301 waiting for reassembly and final adjustments.

All the working parts on Brenda have been tested and approved.  Her gauges and dials are still in beautiful condition. She's going to make someone a wonderful sewing partner.  This is a true workhorse of a sewing machine.  Made of metal and as sturdy as an antique car, these old gals will toil for generations to come.

Some of Singer's 301s were designed to be portables, while others were wired to be either portables or cabinet models.  The cabinet models required a 2-part plug, and Brenda is such a sewing machine.  If you ever do want to put her in a cabinet, she's all ready for you.
A Singer 301A sewing machine that was sold in a cabinet did not come with a drop-down bed.  This is where Brenda's story is.  I never noticed until I was photographing her that she has a fold-down bed that once belonged to another Singer sewing machine!  Obviously, it's fits perfectly and was taken from a 301A, but look closely at the decals and you'll see that they are from a later year.  It's also possible that her seamstress ordered the bed from Singer and at the time, this was the style of decals that were being used.  No matter.  It's all part of her glorious history and I decided to leave her exactly as she is.  I love the history of these old gals and feel they should be allowed to carry their stories with them.
The Original Bobbin Case works perfectly and the tension has been properly adjusted to match the upper thread tension for a perfect stitch.
A Singer 301 houses its motor underneath, so it makes for a nice quiet operation.  Note how clean and damage-free the inner workings are.  All the gears and moving parts were cleaned and greased.
The lamp is covered by a magnified glass which makes for a nice bright sewing light.

Brenda's case is in very good condition.  The handle and latches are all nice and strong and her grass cloth and leather trim are better than the average 301 Case.  There is one spot on the lid of the case that appears to be an oil spot.  The grass cloth can be painted to make it look like new, but I chose to leave this on it its as-found condition.
