" Judith "

~ Singer Featherweight 221 Number AF073579 ~
October 10, 1938
Sweet Daily Stitcher
Like most Featherweights who have served their mistress well over the years, Judith's cosmetics will not be the finest you've ever seen.  She was well-loved and put to good use as she was intended and her paint and decals show the evidence of her loyal service.  But, don't let her outside fool you.  Judith sews just a beautifully as any and I've learned that sometimes these older gals actually stitch better than the ones that have languished in their cases for years.  I guess they become a bit spoiled and don't really want to have to come out and perform - ha!  Judith is very special in that she's one of the earliest Featherweights and was produced in year 5 of Featherweight production.  As such, she has some early designs that are quite fun and uncommon as they changed these soon after Judith was created.

The earliest Featherweights had a Scrolled design etched into the face plate.  Towards the very end of the Featherweight production, Singer used up old stock scroll face plates and you can find this plate on some of the last ones as well.  You can see the quality of chrome Singer used.  Even in a 71 year old sewing machine, the chrome is still bright and shiny without any pitting or rust.
Note the shiny chrome plate that indicates the stitch length.  These are painted black in the later Featherweights and only the earliest ones have this nice touch.
The numbers on the tension dial are still vivid and easy to read.
Note the paint on the top of the arm.  This is where the previous owner lovingly tried to touch up her Featherweight.  It's a bit lumpy, but I think it adds to the charming history of this old gal.  Obviously it doesn't affect Judith's performance in any way and can easily be corrected if you ever chose to do so.  I'll leave that decision up to her next owner as I always leave my Featherweights in their as-found condition with all their history evident ;-)

Another detail that points to her early age is Judith's shiny chrome hand wheel.  The edge of the wheels were polished and then chromed to a high shine.  The later models were all painted black.  Judith is truly a diamond in the rough.
Judith has her original Singer motor that runs strong and fast.  Her bakelite plug surround has no missing chips like so many do.  They are a bit fragile and many have chips or breaks in them.
Although her decals are a bit faded in front, along the side and back they are still bright and pretty.
Touch-ups aside, Judith still has some shine left in her and she's certainly pretty enough to leave out and display proudly!
Here is the back view of the touched-up area.  Hubby thinks over the years the paint faded from the owner carrying it around at this point.  Makes sense.  There aren't any dings or dents to indicate it was ever abused or dropped, so this obviously was scratched by scissors or the clear coat was damaged by perfumes or lotion on the hands.
The original bobbin case is rust-free and works perfectly.
Most of the gold decals are still bright and shiny with a few nicks here and there.
The Type 2 case is sturdy and in remarkably good condition.  A few dings here and there where it did its job protecting Judith!  It has a leather handle and nice strong latches and hinges.  And there is an original case key for the locks.
