Singer 301A
1951 Rare Black Long bed
NA195321
While the majority of my sewing machines are the Featherweights, I occasionally come across the big sister to the Featherweight - the 301A. Many of their parts are interchangeable and they share many similarities. However, the 301A is a larger, heavier sewing machine that is perfect for someone who needs just a little bit more power and strength. They are wonderful for upholstery, denim, leather and other heavy fabrics. Of course, they do a beautiful job on standard fabric as well. They are coming into their own and are fast gaining popularity with quilters.
Marjorie was completely disassembled, cleaned, polished, lubed and oiled. She was then reassembled and adjusted and she's all ready to go back to work. The photo below shows how she was refurbished. This is a 301 waiting for reassembly and final adjustments.
Her cosmetics are quite nice and most of her golden decals are still lovely. She has some hazing to spots on her clearcoat finish, but of course that doesn't affect the way she sews.
All the working parts on Marjorie have been tested and approved. As you will see, although she has pin marks and some surface hazing, she's going to make someone a wonderful sewing partner. This is a true workhorse of a sewing machine. Made of metal and as sturdy as an antique car, these old gals will toil for generations to come.
The built-in carrying handle makes moving the 301 around so easy. It folds down out of the way for storage.
Although she shows pin marks and scuffs in the clear coat finish, Marjorie's decals are quite nice with only small nicks and no major wear.
Her Original Bobbin Case was checked out, cleaned and adjusted for a perfect lower thread tension.
She has the long fold down extension bed which is so much nicer than a short bed. I have found that my projects tend to catch on the corners of the shorter bed, so I understand why most seamstresses in the know demand the long bed.
A Singer 301 houses its motor underneath, so it makes for a nice quiet operation. Note how clean and damage-free the inner workings are. All the gears and moving parts were cleaned and greased.
The lamp is covered by a magnified glass which makes for a nice bright sewing light.
Included with Marjorie are the following:
• Original and Complete Owner's Manual
• Green Singer Accessory Box
• Gatherer
• Ruffler
• Foot Hemmer
• Adjustable Hemmer
• Zipper Foot
• 5 Bobbins
• Original Singer Zig Zagger
• Original Bakelite Foot Pedal
• Original Carrying Case
• Copy of the Singer Adjustor's Manual
• My own Hints and Tips
• Help and advice whenever you need it.
The Zig Zagger was cleaned and tested and works perfectly. Below is an actual sample of one of the patterns.
Because so much is similar on a 301 to a Featherweight, I'm including my Tips booklet as well.
The Carrying Case has some wear to it, but it's still nice and strong. The grass paper is in good shape and the synthetic leather trim, while showing wear, is still intact.
