"Nina"
301 Singer Sewing Machine
1951
NA078145
Nina may be one of the most pristine 301 Singer sewing machines I've run across.  And the fact that she has the coveted black paint with gold decals makes her even more remarkable.  Most of the 301s were mocha or 2-tone since they were introduced just  as Singer was converting everything to more "modern" colors and styling.  The 301 with its Art Deco style is certainly evidence of the direction Singer wanted to take.  The black paint was replaced with the tans that were considered more contemporary and as such, very few were made in the black color, unlike the Featherweights.  So, you can imagine why collectors love these rare black beauties.

The side view shows clearly why Singer calls the 301 a Slant Needle.  The Art Deco design is also very obvious.
At the top of her pillar is the only flaw I was able to find in Nina's paint.  It appears that lotion or perhaps perfume may have gotten into the clear coat and made it slightly hazy.  She's been completely polished and shined and I made no attempt to correct this area as it's not very noticeable.  However, I did want to point it out.
The handle built right into this Singer makes it so convenient to tote.  It folds down for easy storage when it's time to put Nina in her case.

You'll appreciate the bubble in the glass cover over the light.  It acts as a magnifier and throws the light right onto the sewing area.
The grecian style gold decals were another change Singer made in their endeavor to modernize their look.  You can see the Nina's gold decals look factory fresh.
Nina has the stamped Throat Plate so you'll have no problem making even seam allowances.  No more masking tape!
Her bobbin case has been serviced and the tension is set for a nice lower stitch.
With so much shine in her paint, it was impossible not to capture lighting glares when photographing Nina.  Isn't she lovely?!
WOW!
Her undercarriage and drip pan shine like new. No dents or bumps to indicate rough handling at all.
The larger Singer motor is tucked up inside the sewing machine on the 301 making for a nice, quiet sewing experience.
What a nice stitch Nina makes!  Beauty is only skin deep and after all, a sewing machine's stitching ability determines her true worth.
Nina will be able to sew any project you dream up.  From leather to upholstery to quilts, she's up for the job.
Nina's foot pedal was custom fitted to a cabinet where she spent most of her days.  It is not unusual to see these type of pedals on the larger Singers since many seamstresses purchased cabinets along with their sewing machine.   The configuration of the electrical supply dictated different style pedals.  This pedal of course works perfectly using her as a table top portable.
Like almost all of these types of cases, the outside covering showed a lot of water marks.  Since Nina is so beautiful, I decided to freshen up her case a bit and put a light wash of paint on the outside.  It made it a little cleaner looking.
Everything stores neatly inside when it's time to give Nina a rest and put her away.
